The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere (Japanese: 大東亞共榮圏 / Dai Tōa Kyōeiken) is a proposed military, economic, and cultural union of East Asian nations led by the Empire of Japan that emerged following the Weltkrieg. The intent and implementation of the East Asia Sphere has varied widely depending on the political party in power in Japan. Academics, scholars, and some politicians see the East Asia Sphere as a manifestation of Pan-Asian ideals of freedom and independence from European oppression, while pragmatists and militarists see it as a vehicle to strengthen Japan's position in the region.
